What every mom needs to know about Infant Swimming Resource Lessons?
When summers arrive, a lot of moms start employing tactics to teach their children how to swim. One such way is through teaching survival through Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) lessons. The ISR method has a lot of loyal followers with over 300,000 students. In recent years, ISR lessons have been hit with negative media attention leaving parents a bit concerned about what these lessons are about.
1. The primary goal of the self-rescue lessons in ISR is survival
Lessons won’t mirror typical swim classes where the kids use floaties and teaching strokes. Instead, the kids will be taught skills to ensure that they can save themselves under any event where they happen to fall in the water or encounter a problem in the water. Rather than swimming on the edge of the swimming pool, they’ll focus more on floating and keeping their head above the water in a calm manner.
2. Lessons that’ll help prepare your kids for multiple circumstances
The ISR lessons include instructions for your child to save themselves when fully clothed. The research behind it supports that not every water accidents occur when the kids are in bathing suits. For ensuring that your kids can transfer their survival skills to various different situations, the instructors hold lessons with your kids in shoes, summer/winter clothes, and more. The additional weight of the garments will force your kids to rely more on sensory-motor input and adjust according to the unknown while better their chances of survival in an accident.
3. Each lesson will be individualized to the child
The lessons will be carried out in one-on-one sessions with instructors who are trained and certified. They’ll be held daily, Monday to Friday for 4-6 weeks for around 10 minutes. According to certified ISR instructors, children this young need to learn through daily consistency and repetition. This will ensure maximal muscle learning while also prevent fatigue.
4. The main element of the program will be “float like a boat”
The float will be a hallmark component of ISR’s program. This position permits the child to breathe and rest when they’re in the water. The float will be used in a sequence that’ll depend on the child’s age.
The babies aged 6-12 months are taught how to roll in the water, to find a horizontal natural float, and to maintain that position while they wait till someone gets to them. Similarly, children aged 1-6 years are instructed the swim-float-swim sequence.
5. They won’t be dropped into the water
There is common misinformation surrounding the survival swimming lessons but lessons never include a moment when your kids are placed in an unsafe environment. Every moment of every lesson will be undertaken under a certified and well-trained instructor’s watch. Children shouldn’t be allowed to struggle in the water and every submersion under the water will be controlled to only be for a few seconds.
While the ISR acknowledges that no kid is down-proof and that every kid requires adult supervision in the water, but their mission is to help the kids save themselves when other barriers fail.
